Another NARAN Review =================== ; ‘Naran’ is quite simple to explain- The best action flick of Mohanlal in a long-long time and the best among all Onam releases. Mohanlal acted in it with such vigorous demeanour as though he had some points to prove to someone. One thing for sure— the raised-moustache-look of his will be intact for a long time to come.
Many scenes of this adventurous film keep you on the edge of your seat. All the action sequence done by Mohanlal himself makes it all the more enjoyable. But it is not all action; there is a good harmony of action and emotion. This is one film that has given Mohanlal ample scope for showcasing his talent and range.
That it is very speedy, and we don’t feel being dragged along is the biggest advantage. And there is no obscene or ranting dialogues, just the jovial and all the same trenchant Mohanlal. Credit must be given to veteran Director Joshi and writer Ranjan Pramod for this. A slight slip-up and this film could have been something very forgetful. Also Cinematographer Shaji and Art director Joseph Nellickal and Editor Ranjan Abraham needs special mention. Then there is Deepak Dev whose music took Lal’s heroism to the next level.
The locations of Hogennakal, where the flood sequence was canned and Pollachi are a treat to the eyes, especially the river side shots. Even thought it is an all-Mohanlal-show, performance wise every actor had his say, especially Madhu, Innocent, Jagathy and Mamukkoya. Surprisingly Siddique is the best villain available today. Bhavana, the heroine, looked cute. But Sona Nair’s role as a sleeper could have been better developed. Devayani looked more like a widow even though her husband was alive.
Yes, it is a no-go as far as the story is concerned. But then who is expecting a story in such an entertainer. The combined effort of brilliant actors and equally good technicians make us less aware of the fact that there is no solid story.
Antony Perumbavoor’s strategy of underplaying the publicity has worked wonders for this film. Audience came in not knowing what to expect and were swept off their feet by the Onam feast provided by Mohanlal in ‘Naran’.
